Numbers are fun stuff, and in BMW's nomenclature, the X5 SUV really is a bigger, more logical barge than the sloping X6. In many ways, the X6 behaves like a thick 3-pack on a big heel. Powered by a 335-hp (40i) or 523-hp (M50i) twin-turbocharged V8, the X6 runs on electricity with the smoothness of shaving cream. The modern sloping roof sacrifices some headroom and garage space, but the folks who decide where to put it don't seem to think differently about the
X5's best price.
Engine, Transmission, and Performance
The X6 40i is powered by a 335 hp 3.0-liter turbocharged flat-six that uses a 48-volt hybrid engine and is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. The M50i has the same gearbox and all-wheel drive, but the two-stage 4.4-liter V8 is much more powerful. Its 523 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque helped it hit 60 mph in just 3.8 seconds on the tracks we saw. Even more amazing, the X6 M has 617 horsepower and is even faster. However, the standard six-cylinder powertrain is short and velvety smooth. The X6 40i and M50i also have popular adaptive dampers and wheel sizes from 20 to 22 inches. We've seen the X6-powered V8 find great cornering grip and deterrence. While the suspension is less offensive than the spec setup on the six-cylinder X6 we tested, it's far from punishing. Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG
The base X6 40i with all-wheel drive has a speed of 21 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the motorway. The faster and more powerful V-eight X6 M50i has 16 mpg DC and 22 road speeds. While the X6's six-cylinder engine exceeded government expectations with a fuel mileage of 75 mpg (part of the main test program) with 29 mpg on the road, the M50i missed its mark by consuming 2 mpg in the same test. . Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
Unsurprisingly, the interior of the X6 looks like a new, different BMW product. It's close to quality materials and lots of smooth contact surfaces, and a large 12.3-inch virtual screen dominates the dashboard. While the device panel looks smooth, the scaling is messy. Fortunately, the optional warning screen is very simple. The key fob is also elegantly placed. BMW's gesture control, which allows you to adjust certain functions, including volume, using hand gestures in front of the infotainment screen, is protected, although not required. Many standard amenities are also offered, including power front seats with 16-way adjustment, adjustable ambient lighting, heated front cushions and passive inputs. While the rear seats are comfortable for two adults, legroom and headroom are reduced by about 2 and 3 inches, respectively, compared to the square X5.
